Garage Door History
Garage Door History | Garage Doors Throughout The Years | Professional Garage Door Services Inc
Garages are a common aspect of modern homes. However, there was a time when they weren’t needed. Before cars were invented and become an accessible mode of transport, homes didn’t have garages. The wealthy had carriage houses for their horse carriages, but ordinary folks didn’t. That all changed when cars were introduced into the market and become affordable enough for the common man to own. At Professional Garage Door Services, Inc, we like to explore the history of this industry and get to know more about garage doors. Here’s a brief look at how they evolved.
Before homeowners constructed garages for their vehicles, they kept them in carriage houses for the lack of a better option. Many car owners rented carriage houses to store their cars and keep them safe from the elements. As more and more people started to own cars, carriage houses began to become obsolete.
Car owners started to construct shelters for their cars in their homes, and these shelters or early garages had carriage house style doors. Unfortunately, these doors weren’t a sustainable solution because frequent use caused much damage to them.
The need for more resilient and compact doors led to the development of overhead garage doors. The first garage door of this kind was invented by C.G. Johnson back in 1921. The first few models were manual, and they were difficult to use. Johnson invented an electric garage door opener in 1926 to make the operation easy. That started the garage door industry we know today.
